Thanks to the Waldo Community Action Partners and the Belfast Garden Club, this year’s Giving Tree at the Library is up and ready! Come pick a card, take it upstairs to let the librarian know which card you picked, bring the unwrapped present identified on the back of the card to the library by December 13 and wish some child a Very Merry Christmas!
You can meet Kate, an American botanist who collected, classified and illustrated the native flora of Maine, right in Post Office Square. She’s part of Belfast’s Bootiful Scarecrow exhibition, which also features another BGC entry—still waiting to be named—in the Water-loo garden. Kate devoted over 60 years of her life, traveling thousands of miles throughout her home state and creating very accurate drawings and watercolor paintings of the plants she found. She discovered two plants, which were named after her: Pedicularis furbishiae (Furbish lousewort) and Aster cordifolius L., var. furbishiae.
Thanks to the team of BGC members who created and decorated BGC Hydroponics, the club’s entry in the annual cardboard boat races that are part of the Belfast Harbor Festival. Paula Smith and Chris Munroe were a strong paddling team and BGC Hydroponics was off and away at great speed – so much so they had trouble making the turn around the flag to race back to the beach. Sad to say, the second place boat made a tighter turn and nosed BGC Hydroponics out of first place, but it was a great race! Congratulations one and all! After all that excitement…
