Maple Sugaring Time Means EdCom Is Busy!

Contributed by Kayleen Penniman, Educational Committee

Well, it may be hibernation time for many of us but in the elementary schools’ garden programs, activities are awake and well. Food Core workers at East Belfast, Nickerson and the CASS school have been busy. Trees have been tapped at the schools that have maples and the schools are busy making and sharing fresh-churned ice cream. The garden workers are reading about Augustus Jackson, the first United States citizen to create a recipe for ice cream using rock salt. The fun part is being invited to help and taste the delicious treats. Students worked hard churning milk and cream in an old-fashioned ice cream maker. The activity ended by watching a video on maple syrup making.

The Education Committee’s work in the schools has also included creating a new and sturdier worm farm, meeting with teaching staff, and working on constructing a real life mud kitchen for two elementary schools. The high school is participating with the construction at the Weymouth school. What fun! Making mud pies!

A meeting to discuss tree planting took place on March 10th at the East Belfast school and the Seaweed Research Project continues among the fourth grade students. Seeds are being started in green house at CASS.
