Belfast clean-up day, May 13

The garden club is taking part in the Keep Belfast Maine Beautiful clean-up day on Saturday, May 13th from 9 am to 11 am. We will be picking up trash on Rt. 1 from Congress St. to Rt. 3. It’s the Month for Native Plants

“I urge all citizens to recognize the importance of native plants to Maine’s rich biological heritage.” With those words, Governor Janet Mills declared April “Native Plants Month.” What does that mean? It means we’re celebrating Blue Iris, Beach Plum, Pussy Willow, and Wild Strawberry. We’re rooting for Hazel Alder and Sweet Birch. We’re hoping for more Dog’s-tooth-violet. Looking for profiles? BGC’s friend, The Wild Seed Project, offers a few here, and of course the Maine Extension office offers a robust list of do’s and don’ts.

Every year the Belfast Garden Club donates gardening books to the Belfast Free Library. In December 2022 the Club donated the following titles: Books for Children Celia Planted a Garden, Gary D. Belfast Garden Club makes donations to Coastal Mountains Land Trust and the Belfast Free Library

The Belfast Garden Club, among other annual donations this month, contributed 16 new books to the gardening and horticulture collection at the Belfast Free Library. The club has made yearly donations to the library for more than 20 years with the goal of making the library’s selection of gardening-related books one of the strongest in MidCoast Maine, said Barbara Gage, president of the Belfast Garden Club. The donation included three books for children and 13 books for adults—ranging in topic from the aesthetic to the practical, with many addressing gardening in a changing climate with organic and earth-friendly methods. The Giving Tree at the Belfast Free Library

Thanks to the Waldo Community Action Partners and the Belfast Garden Club, this year’s Giving Tree at the Library is up and ready! Come pick a card, take it upstairs to let the librarian know which card you picked, bring the unwrapped present identified on the back of the card to the library by December 13 and wish some child a Very Merry Christmas!
